This speech in which Prime Minister Julia Gillard labels Opposition Leader Tony Abbott a misogynist is a noteworthy speech in my opinion. I am only recently 18 and haven't yet voted and to be perfectly honest, I am not overly interested in politics. As such I lack the knowledge to validate whether what she is saying is true or not. But taking it on face value only, I find her speech conforms with what I believe. Like our Prime Minister, I am offended by sexism and her speech I believe has done women all across Australia proud. I truly love Australia but I do believe that in some ways Australia still has misogynistic tendencies that must be addressed. Further, misogynism and sexism is by no means something that we want infecting our political system. We teach young men and women, like myself, that being sexist is unacceptable but what message does it send when Politicians, holding such high statuses, get away with it? It is, indeed, an unacceptable "double standard" as Prime Minister Gillard notes. Though Tony Abbott, purports to be a feminist, actions truly speak louder than words, and his past behaviour powerfully suggests otherwise.
