My first impressions of JOUR1111 –
Introduction to Journalism and Communications were very positive indeed! I have
always been interested in Journalism but have never studied anything like it
and as such I was both nervous and excited waiting for the lecture to begin. In
this first lecture, Dr. Bruce Redman introduced Journalism and Communication as
well as outlining the importance of studying such a degree and the current
challenges the field of Journalism unfortunately faces. I found Dr. Redman’s
comment regarding Journalism’s ability to “get inside peoples’ lives and
hearts” particularly provocative as it further enhanced my excitement at
commencing what appears to be such a worthy area of study. Moreover, his remarks
on why to study Journalism and Communication really cemented in my mind that I
had chosen the right course for me as he powerfully stressed the legitimacy of
these areas of studying. The field of Journalism can tell us about ourselves –
it reflects the values, beliefs and attitudes held by society.
Most thrillingly for me, however,
was the freedom that the course evidently gave students. Studying a Bachelor of
Law as well as a Bachelor of Arts, I sometimes find the strictness and
exactitude of Law, well let’s be honest … suffocating and creatively- stifling.
Having now a course like JOUR1111, I feel liberated! I have found a place, a
safe haven if you will, where I can creatively express myself – something
relatively impossible within the confines of my current Law subjects. Within this course and specifically within
this Blog, my imagination can truly run wild! So watch this space!
