Digital Manipulation & the Beauty Industry

Digital Manipulation is the process of using digital means to edit photographs in order to construct an illusion, which poignantly can be devastatingly deceptive. Though Digital Manipulation undeniably is very beneficial, it has also been utilised by some, such as the Beauty Industry, to generate unrealisitc, unattainable, distorted representations of women. These representations permeate all of society and are located everywhere - on billboards, buses, trains, in magazines, on television etc.

For young, credulous teenage girls, the Beauty Industry's arguably excessive adoption of Digital Manipulation poses the threat of inciting an unrealisitc image of self, as girls begin to obsess over an "ideal."

The following Short film, 'Beauty Pressure,' created by the beauty brand, Dove, draws focus to the effect distorted images, created thanks to Digital Manipulation, can have on the self-eestem and confidence of young females. The movie highlights the fact that these images are bombarding the youth and saturating our society.
